Meeting - Dec 12, 2002 - Digital Photography II
Jim Lavrakas, an Anchorage Daily News staff photographer for the past 20 years, spoke about the advent of digital photography in the newspaper business. He also showed examples of his work and discuss how ‘filmless cameras’ have changed the face of photojournalism.

Meeting - Nov 14, 2002 - Computer Based Training Creation
Local business consultant, Wes Newman of ARTS, provided a great overview of how custom CBT (Computer Based Training) solutions can be created using Authorware and Swish.

Meeting - Oct 10, 2002 - Satellite Broadband and Wireless Networking
Tom Brady from Microcom in Anchorage provided an excellent overview of satellite broadband internet service followed by a great discussion with the audience on wireless networking.

Meeting - Sep 12, 2002 - Small Business Accounting Software
Jacque Briskey, CPA, presented an excellent program comparing consumer quality accounting packages including the long-established Peachtree Complete, feature-rich MYOB, and the popular QuickBooks.

Meeting - Aug 8, 2002 - Digital Photography I
Our scheduled speaker was unable to show up at the last minute but a lively discussion ensued among the meeting attendees concerning their own experiences, needs, and wants in the realm of digital photography.

Meeting - July 11, 2002 - Computer Recycling and Reuse
A public forum was held on the issue of proper and responsible recycling and/or reuse of surplus computers. A panel of experts discussed the issues and opportunities which was followed by a facilitated public discussion.
The panel details included:
- Guy Barton from SmurfIt-Stone Recycling discussed the toxicity issues and how some ‘solutions’ have only relocated the toxins to new locations.
- Leslie Simmons from the DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) provided an overview of current laws and ordinances regarding local recycling of computers and monitors.
- Tom Shackle of Parents, Inc. (affiliated with the National Cristina Foundation) discussed their recently initiated program for reclaiming surplus computers to distribute to families with disabled children and other needy populations.
- Sean Skaling from GreenStar, Inc. discussed the recycling solutions currently available in Anchorage, and a possible approach to recycling/reusing computers and monitors in Anchorage.
The meeting was intended to inform individuals about computer recycling issues and existing options for responsible computer recycling in Anchorage and to bring together individuals and organizations interested in planning for a responsible, long-term solution to this problem.

Meeting - June 13, 2002 - Linux Demonstration
Mike Barsalou enlightened our group with one of the flavors of Linux, some of the utilities, and the free Sun StarOffice software suite. He also gave a short overview of the system, its history, and how it can work with and/or on a Windows box.

Meeting - May 9, 2002 - 7 Common Quickbooks Mistakes
Dick McCart of Accounting Solutions gave an excellent presentation on using QuickBooks accounting software and avoiding common mistakes.

Meeting - April 11, 2002 - Small Biz Computer Security Threats
Todd Clark of Denalitek, Inc. enlightened us concerning network security - "Computer Security Threats to Small Businesses -- why 2002 will be the worst year yet".
The session covered the increasing threat to small businesses with Internet access. The risks to business owners, board members and other stake holders in smaller organizations were addressed along with a high-level overview of the steps involved in mitigating these risks. Mr. Clark also recounted some of the technical details of various successful attempts at external penetration testing for Denalitek clients.

Meeting - March 14, 2002 - Cool Web Design Tools
Scheduled speaker David Moletti of Technoids was not able to make it this time but Jean Laughton of Chugach Electric stepped up to the plate and was able to fill in at the last minute. She presented some cool web design tools like SWiSH and sample pages using those tools!

Meeting - February 14, 2002 - Tip & Tricks with MS Excel
Our own Dawn Scott, a computer trainer in Alaska since 1984 and ACS board member, showed tips and tricks using Microsoft Excel XP, demonstrating everything from clever uses of absolute cell references to the power of the data menu, pivot tables, and more!

Meeting - January 10, 2002 - Adobe Photoshop 6
Local professional photographer Randy Brandon of 3rd Eye Photography gave an excellent review of Adobe Photoshop 6's new look, palettes, vector layers, photo manipulation options, and much more.
