Our own Dawn Scott shared some useful tricks and tips for use with Microsoft Word. Her presentation was similar to those she has given at the local Information Technology Expo and Conference for the past couple of years which have been very well received.

Meeting - November 8, 2001 - Web Mapping
Andy Garrigus, P.E., Technical Manager at E-Terra in Anchorage demonstrated key technologies currently available to distribute and display detailed mapping and technical drawing and database information integrated together using a web browser. Many organizations generate and collect large amounts of technical information. The value of this information or data is measured by their ability to share it with other departments, organizations, field crews (Point of Work) or the general public. Andy covered technologies and several sample applications that make this level of communication possible with vector, raster, and database information.

Shannon Weiss of Illusions too, a local desktop publishing and web design business, discussed the purpose of different graphics formats and how to choose the best format for your project. She also shared some very useful tips and tricks of graphics design.

Computer Cop, Detective Glenn Klinkhart, gave an excellent presentation on how the Anchorage Police Department uses computers as an effective tool in their daily work.

Meeting - June 14, 2001 - Computer Intrusion Detection
Charles Preston discussed and demonstrated ways to detect intrusions, determine what types of intrusion you may be experiencing, how to block intrusions, compared firewall and other products, and concluded with a brief discussion on current virus issues.

Meeting - May 10, 2001 - GPS and Mapping Software
ACS member John Scudder demonstrated some popular Delorme and Garmin software mapping packages and showed how they can interface with a GPS (Global Positioning System) device. We learned the advantages of GPS mapping software and hardware for everyday use at a beginner to intermediate level. A lucky ACS member attending the meeting won the great door prize -- a Garmin GPS graciously donated by Northern Lights Avionics!
