Member’s Favorite Web Sites - 2004
  (along with submitter’s comments)

www.JibJab.com - political humor, different from other sites of same nature.

www.AlaskaMagicCircle.com - because it's my club and I designed the site ... always promoting magic.

www.hpLearningCenter.com - offers free on-line classes offered by Hewlett-Packard.

www.YourDictionary.com - On-line dictionary and other grammar reference. You can subscribe to the word of the day by e-mail.

www.HistoryChannel.com/mailcall/mailcall.html - Marine and Actor R. Lee Ermey's (the Marine Drill Sargeant in Full Metal Jacket) answers viewer's questions about military technology from the Mail Call television series. You can also visit R. Lee's web site at www.RLeeErmey.net and order the action figure.

www.DavidRumsey.com - Maps, Maps, Maps!

www.Groklaw.net - Major focus is following and reporting in excruciating detail the SCO vs The World (of Free and Open Source Software) including IBM, Novell, AutoZone, DaimlerChrysler, et al.

www.Heise.de - For the past year or so I have been studying German at UAA. This is a German language site focused on reporting events in the technical (computer) world. I am at the point in my studies where I can get the gist of the story without having to look up words. When I need to look up something, I go to http://dict.tu-chemnitz.de.

www.Ibiblio.org/pub/linux and www.LinuxISO.org -Two sites I visit regularly to look for the latest and greatest software downloads (FOSS of course).

www.Google.com - This is my favorite search site. I seem to have better luck searching with it then I do www.Yahoo.com.

www.Disney.com - My favorite site for the youth program I work with. It has games that are age appropriate for the younger students but the games are still working their skills in hand-eye coordination, as well as their store, a movies section, a booking section for vacations and much more.

www.Komando.com - Kim Komando gives tips, answers questions and discusses the latest in computer and electronics technology in a way that almost anyone can understand it.  She has a great website that is easily searchable.

www.SeatGuru.com - Very, very helpful when you travel. It does not just say that some airplane seats are better than others, but gives easy to understand explanations of why each seat is graded each way.

www.FindLaw.com - Very useful for anyone in the legal field, or is looking for an attorney, expert witness, process server etc., even if they are out-of-state.

www.Fandango.com - I like it because I can check movie listings conveniently.

www.FNBalaska.com - First National Bank of Alaska - this is my bank and I can bank online conveniently.

www.HotMail.com - This is my site for checking my mail. It is my choice e-mail solution because I can check it from anywhere.

www.EvilAvatar.com - This site is dedicated to providing links and commentary to web sites and articles for computer and video gaming enthusiasts. I know the web site owner personally (used to play Dungeons and Dragons with him) and I feel you get honest reviews and commentary on games.

www.Salon.com - One of the first subscription Internet news and articles websites. I originally started going to this website to read articles by Camilla LaPaglia, David Horowitz, and Garrison Keillor.  They no longer write for Salon, but I still maintain my subscription and go to the website on almost a daily basis.

www.WashingtonPost.com - Washington Post newspaper.  Back in 1999 I did a web search for online advice columnists.  That's when I found Carolyn Hax and her advice column "Tell Me About It."  Every Friday she has a online chat session inviting readers to send in questions. I've also started using the Post as a source of my daily news.

www.ParlorSongs.com - A fun, informative and resource site for late 1800s and early 1900s popular songs. Can download PDF’s of much of the sheet music available.

www.InfoNetWare.com - Real Term technology applied to internet search.  Sorts results into topics which you can then click on the ones you want more sites of and make a bibliography and print it.

www.LEF.org or www.LEF.org/magazine - Life Extension Foundation. Health topics including latest research on supplements, also the magazine link for their monthly publication. Current issue has compelling articles on prisons, health issues in prisons and
the importance of a jury system.

www.Kielack.de/games.htm - A German site with several games ... roof drop being one of my favorites.

www.Radio-Locator.com - All kinds of radio stations all over the world. A really huge list and a means to pick and start listening to a lot of the stations. The only thing missing is they don't have any good rockin' blues stations.

http://HoaxBusters.ciac.org/HoaxBustersHome.html - I use this site occasionally when I get those pesky chain mails about assorted things that are too good to be true.  This place has a pretty good read on most of it.  When I find one I will sometimes try a "reply to all" and let them know it is not true.

www.TimeAndDate.com/worldclock - Shows the current time for lots and lots of places around the world.

www.AKHS.AtFreeWeb.com - This a guide to hiking around the Anchorage area.

www.SkyAuction.com - The high bidder gets the trip or room ...

http://my.Yahoo.com - My yahoo customized home page where I have airfares, movies, weather, news, email, etc., customized to my preferences.

www.Expedia.com - I frequently look up maps on international locations.

http://Sled.Alaska.edu/databases/home.html - The Databases for Alaskans project, where the State of Alaska pays for Alaskans' access to fee-based database collections!

www.IMDB.com - Internet Movie DataBase - Movie and actor info.
