Early History of the Alaska Computer Society

by Howard L. Bonar, Secretary, Alaska Computer Society

It's hard to tell exactly when the Alaska Computer Society came into being as the early stages of development are lost in the dim reaches of pre-history. We have heard that there were a number of meetings of interested people starting as early as 1982. Their work culminated in a "recorded" official organizational meeting held on Nov. 3, 1983.

Mr. Stephan Routh chaired this meeting and agreed to chair the steering committee until such time as an election could be held. Mr. Lloyd Barber accepted the post of Treasurer. Mark Bolzern and Douglas Davis took on the job of hosting a Bulletin Board and Jerrianne Lowther was named Editor of the News Letter. Although the notes don't say so, she also served as Secretary. Other attendees were James Dokoozian, Charles Meachan, Karen Perrier, and Dale Wilkins. James Dokoozian accepted responsibility for securing the necessary forms from the state for articles of incorporation, by-laws, and federal tax exemption.

After this auspicious beginning, the first general meeting was held on Thursday, Nov. 17, 1983 starting at 7:00 pm at General Computer Services located at 570 West 53rd Ave., Anchorage, Alaska. The room was filled to overflowing showing the need for a much larger meeting room.

The December 1983 meeting was changed to the second Monday of the month starting at 7:30 pm and moved to Software Unlimited at 1000 West Northern Lights Blvd.

Attendance was growing rapidly and so to accommodate the growing number of members, the February 1984 meeting was changed to the second Thursday of the month (the 9th) and moved to International Airport Inn at 3333 West International Airport Road.

On May 2nd, 1985, the official Articles of Incorporation for the Alaska Computer Society as a non-profit Corporation in the State of Alaska were adopted by the board of directors. They were: Roger Stickney, President; George Harper, Vice President; Jerrianne Lowther, Secretary; and Norman C. Duquette, Treasurer. Other directors listed were Stephan Routh, Mark Bolzern, Dale Wilkins, Martin Peterson, and William H. Ross.

The June 1985 meeting was the start of the Question and Answer session as part of the meeting.
